Greenish-grey stones have been quarried in Ostermundigen since the Middle Ages, which characterise many well-known monumental buildings, including the Federal Palace. In the 19th century, the Ostermundig quarry became the largest quarry in Switzerland. The heavy carts put a strain on the roads and obstructed traffic.
